Selection route

From application to HMS Raleigh.

The Royal Navy joining process tests more than fitness. Prepare your body, service knowledge and daily standards before Candidate Preparation Course and initial training.

01

Application

Choose your profession, check eligibility and submit the Royal Navy application. Your chosen role shapes the aptitude score and later training requirements.

02

DAA and interview

Complete the Defence Aptitude Assessment, then show clear motivation, service knowledge and suitability during the formal selection interview.

03

Four-day CPC

Royal Navy ratings normally complete the four-day Candidate Preparation Course, including medical and fitness assessments, before a training offer is confirmed.

04

Initial training

Successful ratings begin initial training at HMS Raleigh. Officer and specialist routes differ, so prepare against the instructions issued for your exact profession.

Use the Royal Navy joining-process page and your candidate instructions for current role-specific stages, standards and dates.

Preparation priorities

Build more than the minimum.

Running fitness

Build a consistent aerobic base and controlled faster efforts so fitness testing is a checkpoint, not the full ambition of your preparation.

Strength and mobility

Develop bodyweight control, useful whole-body strength, core capacity and mobility that carries into repeated training days.

Service readiness

Know your chosen profession, organise your kit, manage recovery and practise the standards expected when living and training with others.

Navy preparation, made clear.

Which Complete Commando programme is best for Royal Navy candidates?

Join We The Elite. It is the service preparation route for Royal Navy, British Army, Parachute Regiment and RAF candidates. Royal Marines candidates have a separate Royal Marines Prep programme.

What should I prepare besides fitness?

Prepare for the Defence Aptitude Assessment, learn your chosen profession, practise interview answers and build reliable organisation, sleep and recovery habits.

Do Royal Navy officers follow the same route as ratings?

No. Officer and specialist routes differ from the typical rating route shown here. Use the linked Royal Navy page and your candidate instructions for the current process attached to your profession.
